Stepping Out Of The Skinny Jean and Into The Harem Pant

Rachel Yeomans

I made a very daring shopping purchase recently. I am usually a very simple dresser and creative fashion ensembles just aren’t my strong suit. I was shopping at one of my favorite boutiques and the owner was wearing these adorable pants that looked like a mix between jodhpurs and harem pants. The were made of dark blue combed cotton with the interior boasting a blue and white checker pattern – they also featured a paper bag style waistband. She wore them tucked into knee-high brown boots and a white sweater with a brown belt.

My view on the harem pant has always been one of, “So you must have really liked MC Hammer”, so I was surprised to have been so drawn to this type of trouser. I, of course, had to try them on. It was a bit confusing with the low crotch but I somehow figured it out. And a word to the wise, when you first try them on, the butt does not look flattering – in fact it sort of hangs similar to a diaper. What was fascinating though, was that the pants conform to your body after a minute of having them on and then the rear is quite flattering indeed!

So not only were these pants extremely flattering, they were amazingly comfortable! And as evidence of the boutique owner, they can be worn with heels in the summer, or with knee-high boots with leggings underneath them in the fall and winter!

I walked out that evening with a new pair of pants in a style that has not yet been introduced into my wardrobe, and I have since worn them almost more frequently than my skinny jeans. I also have received an ample amount more compliments on these harem-style pants than any pant I have ever owned. This was a very good example of how fortunate – and fashionable - it can be to step outside of your comfort zone every once in a while.
