Dressed For The Occasion

Andra Naylor

Now that we’re in the midst of the Hollywood awards season, it’s only appropriate that we dish about dresses. Even though many of us might not be frequenting the red carpet, we all have occasions, whether you’re going out for the evening, attending a wedding or maybe hitting a charity ball, in which we’ll need the perfect dress.

In my opinion, there isn’t anything sweeter than the sweetheart neckline. Sweetheart strapless dresses flatter almost any body type and are a classic that never goes out of style. Here, See by Chloe kicks it up a notch with detachable straps and kicky gold buttons. Made of twill in “army” khaki, this dress is amazingly versatile. See by Chloe “Sweetheart Dress”, $385 at shopbop.com.

Futurism played a big part on the runways for spring, so be prepared to shop looks like Michael Kors’ cut-outs and Donna Karan’s contemplative billows. Futurism can be interpreted as minimalist but not manly, clean but not stark, and with just the right amount of fresh energy to take us into the next decade. Unsure about this trend? Get your feet wet with a futuristic-inspired pair of pumps by Brian Atwood. Brian Atwood Alley Patent Leather and PVC Pumps, $695 at net-a-porter.com.

I’m not usually a fan of open-shoulder dresses or tops, but I’m drawn to this “Batwing” Tassel mini dress by Leyendecker. I love the olive and beige marbelized print, as well as the fluffy tassel at the sleeve. Pair with tall pair of pumps and this flirty dress is perfect for a night out. $330 at intermixonline.com.

Tory Burch is everyone’s favorite designer these days and it’s easy to see why. Check out the Sener Dress with drop sleeves and a slouchy shape. Uber-flattering, this dress is just asking for accessories. Pair with a chunky necklace as shown here, stacked bangles or bright hued pumps. $365 at toryburch.com
