Tough Luxe

Jacqueline Zenn

Ah, spring. The time of year when florals and pastels start to rule the racks, and a girl’s thoughts start to turn to pretty chiffon frocks and delicate jeweled sandals. However, what if you’re just not that kind of girl? The same pieces that look rock chick cool in the fall and winter can look out of place in warm weather, but it is possible to keep your edgy downtown look without melting in the heat.

Start with the shoes. Gladiators like these dramatic Pour La Victoire numbers might be the ideal choice, but boots (now is the time to wear those peep-toe booties) can work provided it is not overly warm out.

Add a bag with the proper details. Think studs, zippers, and other bold hardware. Think rich pebbled leather, think deep colors and of course, shades of gray and black. This DKNY chain-trimmed shoulder bag most definitely fits the bill.

Anchor your look with a belt. A thick leather or multi-strapped belt like this Fina Firenze double buckle style can completely change the mood of even the girliest ruffled dress, or check out this Nicole Miller metal ruched belt for something a little out of the ordinary.

Pay attention to the color palette. If you do decide to wear white, ivory, softer hues, make you sure you balance them with neutral deep shades. If black looks too harsh in the light of spring, try charcoal gray or navy. For instance, this wavy striped Marc Jacobs sundress has that feminine silhouette, but the colors are anything but sweet - just add some metallic sandals and a wide multi-buckle belt and you’re good to go.

Pile on the jewelry. Think necklaces that are virtual tangles of chains such as this Kenneth Cole piece, an arm of studded bracelets, or earrings that make a serious statement.

There’s no need to alter your style to match the mercury in the thermometer – you might have to put away your leather jackets for a bit, but you can keep your tough girl edge all year round.
