Like Jasmin In "Aladdin"...But With Cocktails

Andra Naylor

Maybe it's because the girls in Sex and the City 2 (in theaters in May) vacation in exotic Abu Dhabi or perhaps it was all the safari chic shown on the runways recently, but whatever it is, I'm feeling a fashion heat wave coming on.

While some will surely roll their eyes at Carrie's harem pants or Samantha's sheer cape cover-ups, there are tribal-inspired looks that can easily be incorporated into every-day summer wear.

Let's talk about those tricky harem pants that can make even the biggest style risk-taker cringe. I believe you can make them work for you, especially if you choose a less-exaggerated pair in a dark color. Take the Flap-Pocket Pants by Diane von Furstenerg ($245 at bergdorfgoodman.com), for example. The high waist and relaxed legs are forgiving if not flattering, and the pockets and drawstring detail make them fun and casual. Or go for a modern take like the pair by Rachel Rachel Roy with asymmetrical zipper closure ($89 at rachelroy.com).

A little less controversial perhaps is the caftan - a top that can be worn as a cover-up, alone as a dress or paired with leggings and jeans. Long-sleeve or short, this versatile piece is a must for your closet. I like the Safari Swirl version by M Missoni ($595 at shopbop.com), a silk-charmeuse number that would be perfect for a poolside party. Pair with oversized shades and a cocktail ring and you've got yourself a look.

Speaking of jewelry, the accessories are bold, stacked and gold when going for global chic. Try a dramatic beaded stretch bracelet like the Philippe Audibert gold-plated "Manchette" available at net-a-porter.com ($525) or go imperial with a very unique multi-strand necklace with snake chains, two-tone medal-beaded chains and colorblock silk-covered ropes (Lizzie Fortunato Jewels Opulent Memories Necklace, $425 at shopbop.com). Keep up the look with embellished footwear like Antik Batik Gladiator Sandals with brass hardware and gold sequins ($215 at neimanmarcus.com).

Finally, we can't discuss Arabian-inspired style without referring to a billowing gauzy gown by designer Matthew Williamson (From Resort 2010. Yes, this is the dress Blair wore on Gossip Girl a couple of weeks ago.) Imitate this look with a long parachute dress by Diane von Furstenberg in hot red ($425 at dvf.com) and you're ready to go on a magic carpet ride of your own!
