Beauty Beat: Get A Sample Of Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate This Saturday!

0 / May 11, 2012 10:00 am

I am quickly discovering Kiehl’s makes some of the best skincare products bar none! I know I’m a little late to the party. Anyway, I have just discovered an oldie, but a goodie. Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate, a cult favorite since its 2005, uses a remarkable 10.5% concentration of pure Vitamin C and is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and improve the texture and tone of the skin.

Formulated to be applied over the entire face under moisturizer after cleansing, the smooth, lightweight fluid is suitable for all skin types, and glides on to absorb immediately, offering a continuous delivery of Vitamin C helping to diminish the appearance of skin aging on the face. Experience a warming sensation as the formula is absorbed by the skin, as the Vitamin C begins to work on fine lines. With continued use over time, this treatment has a significant and progressive effect on “marionette lines” around the mouth, “crow’s feet” and sub-orbital wrinkles in the eye area as well as other facial lines and wrinkles. In addition, skin shows an improvement in texture, tone, and sallowness.

I absolutely love this product! I noticed a difference in my skin’s texture after one use! It keeps getting better every day too. Usually I feel a burning sensation when I use Vitamin C and I did not at all with this concentrate. A little warming, yes, but no burn.

How can you get your own FREE sample (or a freebie gift for Mom)? This Saturday, May 12, Kiehl’s is hosting a “Kiehl’s Day of Strength,” at all Kiehl’s locations. You are invited to any Kiehl’s location for some Vitamin C refreshments, and to receive a complimentary 10.5 day sample to experience for yourself.

Visit Kiehls.com to find your nearest Kiehl’s.

Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate, $58.00 for 1.7 fl. Oz.

The Makeup Show NYC May 13th & 14th: Interview with Director James Vincent

0 / May 10, 2012 3:00 pm

It’s that time of the year again for the 2012 The Makeup Show NYC! If you have not heard about The Makeup Show, then you must have been living under a rock (well not really) -  but it is the place to be for professional beauty artists and the entire industry. The Makeup Show has been the holy grail for PRO-Only education and hands-on-training, with pro-focused brands and industry sponsors.

James Vincent

I was able to speak with James Vincent, Director of Artist Relations & Education, about New York’s upcoming show and what was in store for us this year! Every year with new products, new launches, new presenters and new brands, I  was excited to ask James questions.

SCS: What’s new and what are you excited about this year for The Makeup Show?

JV: Every year we bring the show a little bit further, and we really work to make it resource. The show is only open to industry insiders, you have to have credentials in order to purchase a ticket. So, what it allows us to do is bring in brands that traditionally offer pro discounts, so we tend to bring in a lot prestige. On top of MAC, Stila and Makeup Forever, NARS is one of the new sponsors which is exciting. In Education, we have some of the best artists joining us as well on the career side. In addition to Crystal Wright and Micheal D’Vellis, we have Jed Root who is one of the biggest agents in the industry. We are also really focusing on career so we have an industry insider panel to inform professionals how to take  their career to the next level and how to land the jobs. Then we also have our first Career Fair with 20 brands bringing in people from their HR Departments and company owners to meet with artists, view their portfolios and resumes and make hiring decisions for not only New York, but nationally as well. Those are the things I’m most excited about on top of all the makeup that will be there too.

SCS: What are some universal pro-products or newly launched pro-products that any woman can use that are reachable by regular consumers?

JV: That’s one of our goals for this show because for me we we are educating and inspiring the makeup artist and they bring these products to their clients. Prosumer clients are such a big part of the cosmetic industry as well. One of the products I’m most excited about at the Makeup Show is Makeup Forever Aqua Eye Shadow. It’s a pencil shadow that’s water resistant, perfect for all skin tones and great as we head into the summer months. The new Stila Beauty Balm is amazing for prepping the skin, again for all skin tones. It’s one product you can use regardless of your foundation to easily make your complexion more flawless everyday. Temptu’s new Corrective Color Wheel is very easy to understand for women of all skin tones. Temptu Air Pops are being taken from the consumer market and are relaunching for pros as well. I am MOST excited about: the launch of The Powder Group’s new brush line!

The Powder Group Limited Edition Brushes

JW:  The Makeup Show artist Jon Hennessey, Orlando Santiago, Danessa Myricks, and Esterique Aiden and myself will be launching a line of brushes where we each have designed three signature brushes, that when combined make up one set.

For more on these brushes, please check the out at The Makeup Show NYC on May 13th and 14th. They will also be exclusively available on Hautelook.com this summer. Each artist’s set of Limited-Edition brushes will retail for $20 or $90 for the full collection, which include brushes from all 5 artists.

R.I.P. Iconic Coiffeur Vidal Sassoon

0 / May 10, 2012 9:00 am

Vidal Sassoon

Iconic hair stylist Vidal Sassoon died yesterday at the age of 84 after a long illness of what was rumored to be  leukemia. He died at his Mulholland Drive estate in California.

Sassoon, who was hugely influential in the hair care and fashion worlds, was the subject of a 2010 documentary, “Vidal Sassoon: The Movie.” According to a NY Times profile in 1999, Sassoon went to work at age 14. As a “shampoo boy,” he was responsible for mixing dyes: bleach powder, peroxide and ammonia. In 1954, he opened his first salon in London and gave himself 5 years to make a difference or he would leave the profession.

“When I first came into hair, women were coming in and you’d place a hat on their hair and you’d dress their hair around it,” Sassoon said. “We learned to put discipline in the haircuts by using actual geometry, actual architectural shapes and bone structure. The cut had to be perfect and layered beautifully, so that when a woman shook it, it just fell back in.” Sassoon and his subsequent salons became known for their precision haircuts and his famed Sassoon style known as the “five-point cut”, a snug, sleek helmet with a W cut at the nape of the neck and a pointed spike in front of each ear.

“He changed the way everyone looked at hair,” Grace Coddington, the creative director of American Vogue and a former Sassoon model in the 60′s, said. “Before Sassoon, it was all back-combing and lacquer; the whole thing was to make it high and artificial. Suddenly you could put your fingers through your hair!”

The London Sassoon salon was used by Roman Polanski for his film “Repulsion,” starring Catherine Deneuve. Polanski later created a ‘lather’ when he paid Mr. Sassoon an unprecedented $5,000 to cut Mia Farrow’s hair for “Rosemary’s Baby” and invited the news media to see it. This proved to be the best form of advertising for Sassoon.

He eventually opened a New York salon and in 1973 debuted his own line of hair-care products. He soon moved to L.A.. Sassoon was married four times, most recently in 1992 to current wife Ronnie.

Shopping The New Henri Bendel Store At Old Orchard Mall Chicago

0 / May 8, 2012 9:00 am

Henri Bendel Store at Old Orchard Mall has the same storefront design as in New York.

Henri Bendel New York recently opened an outpost at Old Orchard Mall, just north of Chicago. The city welcomed Henri Bendel back with open arms at Watertower Place last fall, since closing its doors 14 years ago on Michigan Avenue. Now what could be better than having yet another Bendel’s to shop? (And parking is free at the wide open Old Orchard Mall!) The two new stores are loaded with accessories, all of the Henri Bendel label. It is easy to find something for yourself from blingy jewelry to chic handbags and scarves. This store opened just in time for gift giving season with Mother’s Day, graduation parties, (my birthday!) and bridal showers right around the corner.

Henri Bendel opened as a milliner in 1985 offering his chic clientele exquisitely-detailed hats and gowns of his own creation and from European designers. He was credited for introducing Coco Chanel and Lavin to the U.S..

A gift from Henri Bendel’s is always a treat! You can find one at every price point, from three fragrance samplers at $38 to travel accessories around $50, cuffs from $85-$155 and handbags up to $500. It is very much a “one for you, one for me” place to shop!

Henri Bendel's Buckle Up line and country club chic accessories in cobalt blue are new for spring 2012. Look at the cute carry along ballet flats, each pair in their own stripe bag, of course.

Henri Bendel brown and white stripes forever!

Henri Bendel Fragrances at around $60, featuring Isaac's Illustrations on the boxes.

Collectable Henri Bendel Scarves

Ever popular Henri Bendel travel bags

Henri Bendel Disturbed Stripe luggage. This jewelery trunk is one of the most extravagant pieces at in the store at $7,500 and I was told it is a big seller!

I could spend hours selecting leather wrapped, Swarovski encrusted and enamel cuffs. No wonder these are Henri Bendel's number one best sellers!

Beauty Beat: What Your Nail Polish Says About You

0 / May 7, 2012 2:00 pm

Do you walk around with chipped nail polish or are you like me and go bananas if you see one chip? Have you ever considered what your nails say about you? Katie Saxton, Nail Expert and President of Custom Nail Solutions, has shared her expert analysis of  what your nails say about your personality. It may or may not be what you think!

Whether they are glammed up with sparkly polish or left plain and unadorned, nails can say a lot about a person. With all of today’s polish and decor options, there are countless ways to give off an impression via your nails. This may make you wonder, what do my nails say about me? Look no further. According to Katie…

Red Nails: Perfectly polished, fire engine-red nails tell others you are daring, outgoing, and highly confident. Wear these out to the club to show off your diva side!

Dark Blue and Black Nails: These shades tell others you are outgoing and live on the wild side. When people see these nails, they get the impression that you live an adrenaline-filled lifestyle full of constant excitement!

Nail Wraps: Adorning your nails with wraps in designs like cheetah, lace, or polka-dot tells others that you are trendy, fashionable, and fun!

Pink Polish: Pink polishes tell others you have a flirty and feminine personality. Polish your nails with pink hues whenever you want to show off your girly and sweet side!

Crackle Polish: crackle polish says you are spunky and high-spirited. Decorate your nails with this style when you want to be noticed.

Colorful Stiletto Nails: Loved by fashion icons Lady Gaga and Beyonce, these pointed daggers tell others you are a diva with attitude (or might cut them if you piss them off)! Wear these when you want the paparazzi snapping pictures wherever you go!

Nude Polish: Clear and nude polishes tell others you are laid-back and have an easy-going persona. Natural hues give off the impression that you are relaxed and enjoy the little things in life.

Neon Nail Polishes: Polishes in neon pink, green, orange, and yellow hues let others know that you are an outgoing extrovert that loves a good party!

Unpolished and Unadorned Nails: Leaving your nails as they are lets others know that you are confident and unstressed about your appearance.

Chipped Polish: When people see chipped nail polish, they can tell that you live a busy lifestyle and don’t have a lot of time to relax (personally it says to me you are lazy). If you notice your polish is chipped, take ten minutes out of your day to get your nails primped or at least remove it. Please.

Painted Designs and Sparkle Polish: Decorating your nails with sparkle polish and polish designs like stars tells others that you have a creative imagination! Choose this style when you want your nails to show off your artistic side!

Bad Judgement: Are You Tanorexic?

0 / May 3, 2012 12:00 pm

Tanorexic Mom Patricia Krentcil, 44...going on 84

So, did you hear about the one where this tanorexic mom allegedly took her 5 year-old daughter into a tanning booth with her? I’m not joking. It was all over my Facebook and Twitter feeds yesterday. I mean seriously. Who wants to tan themselves into a wrinkled piece of shoe leather? OK, I admit there was a time back in my teens and early 20′s when I tanned, er burned, with baby oil and a reflective mat, but I was young and dumb and of course would never heed the warnings of my mother. Thankfully, however, I got wise as I got older. Now I don’t tan very much and if I do, I use self-tanner. I also wear at least a 30 SPF every day.

Magda from 'There's Something About Mary'

Anyway, this morning the story was all over the news and the NY Post thought it front-page worthy (read ‘Toast of the Town here). Do you know anyone who tans too much anymore? Do they think they are too tan? I think it goes without saying you have to be absolutely insane to bring a child into a tanning booth. I also think it’s pretty nuts for adults to go into them any longer. So I thought it was the perfect opportunity to revisit my post from last summer on The 10 Best Self-Tanners. Which on is your favorite?

New York Events. Dove Launches Real Beauty Campaign Live in Times Square!

0 / May 2, 2012 1:00 pm

Every so often an event comes along that is so cool, we can’t help but be inspired. And that’s  exactly how we felt about the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. Since 2004,  Dove skin, hair and bodycare has employed various communications vehicles to challenge beauty stereotypes and invite women to join a discussion about beauty. They strive to abolish common ideas that affect women’s self-esteem at every age by widening and embracing the definition of beauty.  The mantra of the campaign is, Imagine a World Where Beauty is a Source of Confidence, Not Anxiety.

Since the campaign’s inception, the brand has been using real women of every age, race and ethnicity to be the literal faces of  the diversity of beauty. So  to bring the wonderfully inspiring message of the campaign to the rest of the world, Dove chose quite possibly the most people saturated area in the country: Times Sqaure. Dove invited press and special guests to celebrate the launch of the “Largest Ever Campaign Featuring Real Women”, which they had set up as a digital billboard high above the bustle of Times Square. What we were in for, however, was not just a chance at witnessing the phenomenon, but to participate in it as well.

The Dove DIY haircare station

The Dove Real Beauty Photo Studio served as the back drop for the party, with the intent of prepping the”models” (us) for a culminating mini photo shoot that would be part of the live billboard. Amazing! Different stations were set up throughout the sleek, and well-lit space featuring a chance to try all the goodies Dove’s lines have to offer.

As the newest beauty venture for the brand, Dove invited guests to indulge in a quick, DIY hair fix with Dove’s Style + Care styling products. A few framed examples of looks to try came complete with easy to follow, step by step directions while all the rubber bands, headbands and bobby pins you could ever need stood patiently by, waiting to be used. The arsenal of styling tools was completed with the Dove Style+Care™ Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum and Style+Care™ Nourishing Amplifier Mousse.

The luxurious Dove bodycare line

After we had given our locks a little love, we sauntered over to the Dove hand-washing station, complete with a small army of gleaming porcelain sinks and fluffy white towels with the Dove logo on the. We were invited to choose one of the various Dove body washes. The creamy formulas ranged from Deep Moisture Nourishing Body Wash with NutriumMoisture™ to Shea Butter Cream Oil Body Wash to go fresh Cool Moisture Body Wash, and more. I chose the purple-logoed go fresh Rebalance Body Wash which smelled divine and made a thick, satisfying lather in my hands as I soaped up. We loved the smell and feel of each one, especially the VisibleCare™ Softening Crème Body Wash, which we found out contains the highest concentration of NutriumMoistureTM, a complex which contains skin-natural building blocks to help improve skin’s look over time. We were hooked!

As an added bonus, we got to peek around and play with the cool Dove Beauty Bar display (below) that featured several of the brand’s NINE beauty bar formulas. No wonder they’ve been around forever!

The leaning tower of Dove soaps

The Dove accessories bar provided jewelry, hats and sunnies to prep for the photo shoot!

Jewelry & Accessories

Bangels

The final part of the prep period invited us all to play a little dress up with a fun assortment of spring accessories, ranging from jewelry to hats to sunglasses. We were encouraged to mix and match the pieces and come up with our own unique look to spotlight our beautiful, glowing skin.

Finally, we were ready for our closeup while the digital billboard outside streamed on a projector screen. Without further ado we posed and flashed a smile for the camera to support Dove’s Real Beauty and strong, beautiful women everywhere!

The Dove Beauty Real Beauty live billboard in Times Square!

A couple weeks later, Dove sent me a snapshot of when MY personal picture went up in the Dove Real Beauty billboard, live in Times Square! I can now scratch that off my bucket list! Thanks again Dove for a wonderful and inspiring evening!

My five seconds of fame in Times Square!
