Coty Withdraws Avon Bid

And they sound pretty pissed. Coty Inc. said Monday it has withdrawn its $10-billion takeover bid for Avon Products, Inc. In a letter to Avon’s board, which was made public, Coty chairman Bart Becht said his company is withdrawing its offer and moving on to pursue “other opportunities.”

Coty made its first approach to Avon in March and raised its bid last week. “We received encouragement from many of your shareholders, research analysts and others in the financial community.  Despite this support, your total lack of engagement with us leads us to believe that you remain reluctant to explore a friendly, negotiated combination on a reasonable timetable.  Two months is enough.  Consequently, as our deadline to begin discussions expired today, our proposal is withdrawn,” Becht wrote.

So disregard our first post this morning. That was yesterday, this is today.

The collection is designed with a vintage Seventies feel. It contains signature denim in a variety of washes and leggings, as well as vintage print tops, flowing maxis and form-fitting jersey knit dresses. Jackets, blazers and chunky relaxed sweaters and knits round out the offering. Bottoms retail from $36 to $59 for printed and sateen denim. Knit tops are $36, dresses and blouses are $59 and sweaters and capes are $69.

“I’m [pleased] to partner with Destination Maternity to design a collection of fashionable styles that make you look and feel great,” said Simpson. “You want to wear clothes that are flattering to your baby bump; you want to show your bump off.” The collection is set to hit stores this Fall.

More Blahnik to Love

Manolo Blahnik, who until recently had just one point of sale in the U.K. — a shop on a quiet street in London’s Chelsea — has inked a long-term deal with Kurt Geiger to sell the brand at Harrods and Liberty. Under the terms of the deal, Geiger will manage and create boutiques within the shoe departments at the two London department stores.

The Liberty space opened earlier this year and also carries tote bags, scarves and stationery adorned with Blahnik’s watercolor drawings. In July, a boutique will open at Harrods featuring the fall collection.

New Couple Alert?: Wu or Theyskens and Net-a-Porter?

They could have been just dancing… or this could be the start of a beautiful friendship. According to source at Page Six, Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet and designer Jason Wu were seen dancing with Theory designer Olivier Theyskens at new Chelsea rooftop hot spot La Piscin this weekend. Maybe it was just beginning of the talks of a new collab? One could only dream of such a thing….(not that dancing with those guys is such a bad rap).

Retail Detail. First Looks of Francisco Costa’s Capsule Collection for Macy’s!

0 / May 10, 2012 1:34 pm

First looks from Francisco Costa's Calvin Klein capsule collection for Macy's

Remember when we first broke the news that Calvin Klein’s creative head, Francisco Costa, was creating his own capsule collection for Macy’s as part of their “A Magical Journey to Brazil” campaign? Well, we have found some sneaky peeks at the upcoming line, Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, and we are liking what we see!

Costa was tapped by the retailer in part because of his Brazilian roots, which ties into this year’s theme. Costa credited elements like Brazilian architecture, sunsets and landscapes as his inspirations for the collection, which maintains his signature sense of structure and minimalism.

The Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein collection for Macy’s is the designer’s first venture into the diffusion line market. The line ranges in price from $135-$180, though Costa insists there is no sacrifice in the tailoring and fit. “I’m more interested in cleanliness,” he told Fashionista. “The cleaner it is, the more relevant it is.”

So take a mental not of these pieces, which definitely look more luxurious than the cost, because we’re sure when they drop on May 15, they will not last long!

Spring/Summer 2012 Trend: Blue & White

0 / May 10, 2012 10:00 am

I love the combination of blue and white. Especially when it’s more than stripes and colorblocking. I favor blue and white patterns. Just ask anyone who knows me. I had to have blue and white Spode for my daywear china and I never tire of it. So why shouldn’t I wear it? Luckily blue and white patterns were on several Spring 2012 RTW runways such as; Prada, Milly, Diane von Furstenberg, Erdem, Karen Walker, Alexander Wang and Band of Outsiders to name a few. Here are some of my top picks of blue & white apparel and accessories:

1. ASOS Mini Tulip Dress With Flute Sleeves In Navy Print, $66.10

2. Anthropologie Zagged Stripes Skirt, $98

3. Diane von Furstenberg Vintage Collection Neoprene Beach Tote, $145

4. Anthropologie Tidal Dock Maillot, $148

5. Thakoon Addition Draped Printed Jersey Dress, $295

Fired for Being Straight?

This lawsuit is getting downright dirty from every angle. Christopher Burch, the ex-business partner as well as ex-husband of of Tory Burch, and Tory herself are being sued because an ex-employee claims that he was fired for being a straight male.

A $1 million federal suit in Manhattan filed against Chris Burch claims he openly stated he “only hired gay men because they were productive and he trusted them,” from The Post. Former employee Jamie Ardigo says he was subjected to “discrimination based on sexual orientation” while working in human resources for the firm, then fired in February for complaining about it. Burch’s attorney Brian S. Cousin said, “The defendants deny the allegations of discrimination and retaliation set forth in the complaint and are prepared to mount a vigorous defense.”

Minnie Rose to Open Pop-Up

Minnie Rose, a contemporary cashmere and sportswear firm, is dipping its toes into retailing. Next month, it will open its first store — a 400- to 500-square-foot pop-up shop at The Montauk Beach House in Long Island. Minnie Rose, known for its range of colors and styles, focuses entirely on specialty stores, selling to such accounts around the country as Henri Bendel, Intermix, and Saks. The shop will stay open through September.

Koch and Kraft Gossip on Jacobs

Apparently, everyone was dying to hear the conversation when conservative Met Museum trustee David Koch met a lace dress-clad Marc Jacobs during cocktails at Monday’s gala. Billionaire Koch and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft were introduced to the designer, who was wearing a sheer black dress over white boxers and pilgrim shoes with rhinestone buckles.

According to Page Six sources, Koch and Kraft didn’t bat an eye at Jacobs’ outfit, but when he left, Kraft said, “I don’t know about the white underpants.” Koch responded, “I agree. Don’t you think he should’ve worn matching black boxers?” “These are two of the most powerful, macho guys,” said a spy, “who were totally nonplused meeting a man in a see-through dress.” I guess Koch and Kraft know their fashion better than Jacobs.

Marchesa Taps LF USA for Contemporary-Priced Line!

0 / May 8, 2012 3:00 pm

Elaborate looks from the Marchesa Fall 2012 runway

Marchesa…..in stores?! The New York-based brand which has become an increasingly popular staple on the red carpet, known for its artful embellishments and calligraphic motifs, is apparently going to become at least slightly more accessible.  The brand just  finalized a licensing agreement with LF USA, the U.S. subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Li & Fung, to launch a lower-priced contemporary line.

According to WWD, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman and co-founder, Keren Craig, wanted to include the brand’s luxe, signature touches to separates, day wear and accessories. The suggested retail price points will range from $150 to $750 (yes, for Marchesa!) “We have always had a vision for Marchesa to be a lifestyle brand,” said Chapman, in an exclusive interview with WWD. “We have been very specific for eveningwear so far. We always had this dream Marchesa could transcend into all different areas of lifestyle.”

A stunning gown from Marchesa's Fall 2012 runway

The as yet to be named collection will embody the same sensibility as the collection line, yet with a wider appeal. “We have been so specific for such a long time, and the idea to broaden out to a different consumer, and to our same consumer as well. We haven’t really looked at that market yet. My dream is to give Marchesa many facets, and that’s just one of them.” Chapman said  the plan is to launch the line with LF USA, who will use its extensive global network to produce the line, around pre-fall 2013.

Spring/Summer 2012 Trend Alert: How To Wear Neon & NOT Look 17 Again.

0 / May 8, 2012 1:00 pm

“Get into the groove, boy you gotta prove your love to me…” Sorry about that. Vintage Madonna pops into my head when I think back to the early 80′s (as do Duran Duran, The Go-Go’s, and all things New Wave). I wore everything from pastels, to Flashdance sweatshirts, to massive shoulder pads to the most fluorescent of neons. I thought I was hot stuff, but the photographic evidence proves otherwise. So I am both elated and terrified that neons are back with a vengeance this spring. I was loving the extreme pops of color on the Spring 2012 RTW runways of Nanette Lepore, DVF, Michael Kors, Peter Som, Jason Wu, Rodarte, Ruffian, Rebecca Minkoff and Sass & Bide to name a handful. Yet, I immediately thought, “how do can I, a woman over 30, incorporate neon into my spring wardrobe and not look ridiculous?”

By now we have all heard the advice “if you wore it the first time around, you shouldn’t the second.” To that I say bullcrap. You can still embrace neon, as long as you do it tastefully and sparingly. Thankfully this season, designers are offering more refined options to wearing the trend. If worn the wrong way or from head-to-toe, you run the risk of looking like a fashion victim. The bright color can also have an aging effect, showcasing the fine lines we might be desperately trying to hide. So remember to keep it sophisticated and accentuate neon with a light hand. Think about a neon pump, clutch, cuff, or a full-on neon dress paired with basic black accessories.

Here are 10 neon items we would love to add to our wardrobes with just the right amount of ‘pop’:

1. Roberto Cavalli Neon Python Snake-clasp Clutch, $1850

2. Diane von Furstenberg Shizuka Ruffled Silk Dress, $445

3. Christian Louboutin Pigalle Neon Pump, $625

4. ASOS Perspex Clutch, $63.63

5. Brian Atwood Alima Neon Patent-Leather Pumps, $795

6. Michael Kors Slash Gown, 3,995 & Elastic Speedclip Belt, $250

7. A.L.C. Delilah Dress, $795

8. Michael Kors Stretch Wool-crepe Dress, $1595

9. Proenza Schouler PS1 Medium Python Shoulder Bag, $3,645

10. Diane von Furstenberg Haley Leather Wrap Belt, $175

Perry Capital Becomes Barneys New Owner

You might notice some big changes happening at Barneys New York soon. It seems as if Perry Capital, the department store’s largest lender, has just become the new owner. Richard Perry’s hedge fund, which specializes in distressed assets, worked with Barneys’ current owner, Istithmar World, and key lender The Yucaipa Companies, to secure the ownership.

Perry Capital will partner with The Yucaipa Companies to shrink Barneys’ debt from its current heft ($590 million) to a goal of $50 million by converting debt for equity. The retailer has plans ranging from its e-commerce to the brick-and-mortar selling floor for how the funds will be utilized. “This agreement provides us with increased free cash flow that will be used to revitalize our stores, invest in Barneys.com and further enhance our customer experience at a time when our operational financial performance is very strong,” said Barneys CEO Mark Lee in a company statement.

Giuliana Rancic: Fashion Designer?

Well, there’s only one thing to do after hosting next to Ryan Seacrest and judging other celebrites’ clothing. Make some of your own! Giuliana Rancic will launch her debut clothing collection called the “G by Giuliana” collection exclusively on HSN, hsn.com and HSN Mobile in September. Rancic plans to spill the beans about G by Giuliana on her reality show May 29.

James Franco for World Domination

The actor/soap opera/model/student/failing Oscar host/cat lover has decided to add another job to his resume. James Franco has been picked to direct, film and photograph the fall campaign for Seven For All Mankind. “It will be about going out at night in California,” said Liat Mazor, Seven For All Mankind’s retail marketing manager.

The series’ final film, “The Death of Natalie Wood,” will premiere May 13 at a preview of the “Rebel” exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Franco’s first cut was three hours long, but it’s been sliced down to less than an hour, Mazor said. “He’s kooky and complex and that’s what we love about it,” Mazor said. Yeahhhhhh, sure.
