Fountain of 30
Who knew so many celebrities would come out for the first-ever Fashion LA Awards? On hand: Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kanye West, Kerry Washington, Minka Kelly, Nicole Richie, Dita von Teese, Liberty Ross, Cody Simpson, Drew Barrymore, Gigi Hadid, Ciara, Dylan Penn, designer Jeremy Scott, and more at the Sunset Tower Hotel in LA. Who knew Kanye West could refer to the Devil Wears Prada AND South Park in his acceptance speech? Who knew Miley would wear something other than nipple pasties? And who knew so many celebs could dye their hair a strange color then parade around the room with tons of other celebs all in the name of fashion? Well, I knew. Or at least I thought I knew.
Here’s what I didn’t know. Kanye West had been ridiculed at one point for liking fashion. Apparently, he is still constantly ridiculed. Gigi Hadid doesn’t always try so hard to be sexy. And when she doesn’t, she looks absolutely fabulous. Drew Barrymore is more fashionista than I ever thought possible. Oh and Ciara has somehow gone back to rock hard abs right after having her baby. Go figure. Here’s what else I learned about fashion at the Fashion LA Awards.
1. Sometimes a shirt can be a dress.
Miley Cyrus, still looking hot in her blond pixie cut, has been really going above and beyond in the name of fashion, taking risks we’d never thought she’d take. Sometimes those risks include nipple pasties and latex. Apparently, though, she does wear clothes and when she does those pieces are Jeremy Scott designs. Cyrus, who presented designer Jeremy Scott with a ‘Best of Womenswear’ award at the event, reportedly said, “When I do wear clothes, and don’t have my titties out…you can thank Jeremy Scott for that.” She can also thank Jeremy Scott for her long white t-shirt which says, “I had nothing to wear so I put on this Moschino dress.” Mr. Scott wore something similar.
If Miley can wear a long t-shirt as a dress, so can you though I wouldn’t try this at home. And if you do, then for the love of God, put some leggings on underneath.
2. It’s OK to wear flip flops to formal events?
No, it’s really not – unless you’re Katy Perry and you can literally do anything you want. Along with her purple hair, big pink fur, and studded pink dress, Katy Perry wore Adidas flip flops to the Fashion LA Awards. Why? According to her Twitter…because @ItsJeremyScott. Hey, if Rihanna can wear a gold sequined coat with nothing on underneath then I guess maybe Adidas flip flops aren’t so bad right?
Wrong! Once again, don’t try this at home. But if you do I’d consider you very, very brave. Fashion forward – not so much.
3. Contrasting Textures Are Cool .
My favorite look at the Fashion LA Awards would have to be the one worn by Drew Barrymore. I’ve never considered this girl to be a fashion icon, but I’ve also never seen her look better. Wearing a print Milly skirt and Zara short sleeve top the post-baby actress paired a painted print skirt with a textured top and glittery shoes in a cool and unique way. She made me realize that it is OK to contradict, if you do it as well as she did.
4. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!
I’m pretty much blown away by Ciara. This woman in the off-white ensemble with the bandeau top had a baby, what, 6 months ago? No words, girl, no words.
5. When in doubt, perforate.
Always one to make a style statement and look effortless doing it, Nicole Richie dyed her hair pink and wore a black leather braided Alfredo Villalba dress with black pumps and Kwiat jewels. The dress was cool, albeit a little undone, but I’m wondering if Richie was running out of ideas or looking for new ones – since I’ve never seen her wear anything like this. When in doubt, perforate? Maybe.
6. Streamlined and sexy wins.
Gigi Hadid is on fire right now. She is so popular that this Fashion LA Awards “Model of the Year” could have gone as crazy as Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus and no one would have batted an eyelash. But – she didn’t. Instead, the top model wore a streamlined and sexy one-shoulder Calvin Klein column in a beautiful and bold color. Kudos to her for keeping her look basic which made it all the more eye-catching.
