After recently viewing Mathieu Mirano’s Spring 2015 Collection during New York Fashion Week I learned his fall collection was to be presented at the Children’s Service Board of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago’s 59th Annual Gold Coast Fashion Awards. I now had the opportunity to talk to the young designer (he’s only 23!), tell him how much I love his aesthetic and find out more about what makes him tick.
SCS: How did you find out about The Gold Coast Fashion Show?
MM: Chalk Boutique asked me! I was honored to be a part of this kind of event with a great cause. I like making women feel beautiful and I love Chicago, it is one of my favorite cities. I always notice how it’s so clean!
SCS: Where is your collection available in Chicago? Anywhere besides Chalk Boutique in Evanston?
MM: It is mostly available at specialty stores. And yes, it is at Chalk Boutique. I love Sharon and Carrie – I have sold to them for 3 seasons now. Their boutique is an amazing backdrop it’s beautiful, modern and all white.
SCS: I know you design for young celebrities, but I saw jackets and pieces in your fall and spring collections that I would wear. Do you account for women of all ages when you design?
MM: Yes, I design for women all ages. Women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond!
SCS: Who is the Mathieu Mirano woman?
MM: I use this word a lot because it is accurate, she is a “worldly” woman. She is polished, sharp, intelligent and thoughtful. Her taste level is very high, she understands color and form. Women with worldliness have a sense of class. I am eternally grateful to these women for inspiring me.
SCS: How do you know so much about this woman and world? You are so young!
MM: I had the opportunity to travel the world since I was little, places like Egypt, India and Japan. Everywhere I go I find influences for my collections.
SCS: The fabrics and textures you use are amazing. What comes first? The materials or the design?
MM: Both! Fabrics are important. I like to manipulate fabrics. The fabrics are from Italy and France but I like to ‘turn them on their head’ and make them something unique.
SCS: What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
MM: To be patient. I know this is a long, multi-step process and I must continue to learn – I will do that to the day I die.
