545 West 34th Street about a month ago. The penthouse loft, complete

(NEW YORK)
Erin Fetherston’s heart may belong in Paris, but her company has spread
its wings across the Atlantic. The designer, who’s said to have been
tapped for Target’s next Go International initiative following Alice
Temperley, revealed at Monday night’s CFDA Fashion Awards gala that
she’s just set up shop for her “American and French” company in
Manhattan. “So much of our business is already taking place in New
York, and we had two shows in New York already,” she rationalized. “It
made sense to take that last step and bring our samples and atelier
here. I’m not walking away from Paris, but it’s more efficient to work
in New York.” Fetherston moved into her new 2,500-square-foot space at
545 West 34th Street about a month ago. The penthouse loft, complete
with roof garden, houses her production team, design assistants, and
pattern makers. Greg Mills will continue to handle her press and sales.
“It’s isolating, but insulating in a way,” the Berkeley, CA-born
designer described of the far-West Side location. “In Paris what I love
is that sense of quiet, and in New York I always feel so frenzied, so
this is a bit away from the chaos.”

Fetherston, who launched her
ready-to-wear collection in Spring 2005, hasn’t been wasting any time.
She recently finished her first holiday collection, done entirely in
New York, which the platinum blonde described as “the perfect way to
get my bearings,” and plans to produce and sample her Spring 2008
collection in the Big Apple as well, citing how frustrating it often
got when Europe essentially shut down for the month of August.
Francophiles need not worry, however. Fetherston reassured that she
will continue to live in Paris. “There’s a certain mystique and charm
about living in Paris that she certainly wants to keep going,” said
Mills, who added that manufacturing will be done in both New York and
Paris.

The expansion seems to be paying off. According to
Mills, Kirna Zabête, who’s been carrying the label for two seasons now,
recently reported complete sell-throughs. In addition, Harvey Nichols
in London has picked up the collection for fall, and will fête
Fetherston with a party this October.
