Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley announced the return of Fashion Focus 2007 yesterday, which is scheduled for October 9-14, 2007. To celebrate the third year of Fashion Week in Chicago, we were also treated to a a quick fashion show featuring fall fashions from a few participating Chicago designers.

Just as last year – Fashion Focus will showcase over 100 local designers, with runway shows at Millennium Park.

The Schedule:

•    Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion – Tuesday, October 9
•    Chicago Sister Cities International Program World Fashion Chicago – Wednesday, October 10
•    Apparel Industry Board’s Chicago Is…Red Hot!!! – Thursday, October 11
•    Designers of Chicago Fashion Show Presented by Macy’s – Friday, October 12
•    The Allure of Couture – Sunday, October 14

Not the same as last year – The Allure of Couture Show on Sunday will feature urban wear, avant guarde and couture designers. Let’s see if this will balance out the aging (and we wish cancelled) Chicago Is…Red Hot!!! show. (By the way, it’s  always with triple exclamation points!!!).

The same but slightly different – GenArt’s Bi-annual Shop Chicago will be in Millennium Park for the first time on Saturday, Oct 13th. A Saturday? That’s new too.

Sort of the same but now with some promise – Designers of Chicago fashions will be available at Macy’s again, but this year they will actually purchase some of the designers apparel – not just consign it for a month. A step in the right direction!

And now for something completely different –
Macy’s is planning a designer incubator program. Six emerging designers will be mentored on the business of fashion, from designs and branding to support and marketing.

The mayor proceeded to tell the attending media the story about how many years ago under a similar program in another city in another department store, there was a designer who started selling ties. He was Ralph Lauren.  I’m sure the mayor has loads of fashion trivia (yes, that’s facetious). What he really knows about the fashion industry is questionable, but maybe that’s okay.  Where he feels Chicago designers are strong is in creativity. He said the word "creativity" at least 100 times, (well maybe just 23) so it seems he thinks of fashion as art, and he thinks it will enrich Chicago "so we won’t be just another Midwestern town." And really, that reasoning is not bad at all! By the way, that was Ralph Lipschitz, Mayor Daley!
