Did you ever consider taking a women’s self defense class? Even if you may never have to defend yourself, and really don’t even want to think about it, you know deep down inside it is important to know what to do should such a situation arise. I attended The Philip Nearing School of Wing Chun’s free women’s self defense workshop last Sunday. There’s good news! The school will hold Part 2 of the workshop on Sunday, January 8th from 12 noon until 2:30 pm.

I have taken a few women’s self defense classes before but I was particularly interested in this workshop and martial art. Wing Chun is said to have been a created specifically for women. Whether it is true or not, it is a close contact martial art. Ask yourself, how many times have you been on the train, the bus or in a crowded bar? Let’s face it, an attacker will probably get up close to you, so how do you defend yourself and get away?

Assistant Instructor Sharon Gosun showed us how to defend ourselves. Not only is Sharon a skilled practitioner of Wing Chun, she is also a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. So don’t let her diminutive size fool you! Demonstrating on Master Philip Nearing (who also gave us instruction during the workshop), Sharon showed us s few devastating ways to stun an attacker. She made it seem so simple and easy. We followed her moves and teamed up in pairs to practice the drills. Well not completely, we did not hurt one another! But we now know what will hurt an attacker. We also learned defensive moves to protect ourselves and how to get away quickly.

This somewhat intimidating concept of fighting soon became fun! We received a lot of individual instruction as Sharon, Phil and the other Wing Chun assistants came around to direct us and answer our questions. By the end of the workshop, we all became friends, and walked out with a little more confidence, too. With just the knowledge of a few moves we have the tools to get ourselves out of harms way. It also made us interested in learning more, and the school offers a variety of classes for all levels.
