Twenty-five years after Grace Kelly’s death at the age of 52, Monaco very much still mourns
its Philadelphia-born princess. The ultimate gorgeous and iconic American princess’ most treasured gowns, a diamond tiara, memorabilia from her royal
wedding to Prince Rainier III and personal letters will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s at the end of the month to benefit the
Princess Grace Foundation.
To celebrate her life, an extensive two-week celebration began yesterday in Manhattan, its centerpiece a Sotheby’s exhibition
of more than 500 personal possessions, including 20 outfits and 65
pieces of jewelry – among them a tiara and her 10.47-carat, emerald-cut
diamond engagement ring – plus hats, hairbrushes, gloves, home movies, letters and, naturally, an Hermès Kelly bag.
Two important outfits (selected by her children) will be auctioned
at an October 25 gala to benefit the Princess Grace Awards for emerging
performing artists: a Helen Rose gray-over-rose embroidered gown that
the actress wore in High Society, her last film; and a Givenchy
sleeveless belted dress with matching bolero jacket. She wore the
latter in 1961 on a visit to the Kennedy White House and a trip to
The auction is open to the public with an initial bid of $2,000 followed by $500 increments. Forms are available at aCelebrationofGrace.com.
In the first half of her life Grace Kelly filmed 11 movies acting opposite Crosby, Gary Cooper,
Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. She worked
with her lifelong friend Alfred Hitchcock three times, producing classics such as, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief. She never returned to the silver screen after marrying Rainier and spent the second half of her life in Monaco.
The exhibition emphasizes Grace’s elegant style, her unerring taste
for understated refinement and designs marked by sumptuous fabric and
clean lines; she was incapable of looking dated or trendy. She loved
accessories, especially hats, gloves and eyeglasses.
For those of us who would love a piece of the action, but can’t swing the price tags, Estée Lauder has blessed us with a Princess Grace Coral lipstick available for $19.50 at saks or esteelauder. Or purchase the cataloge at Sotheby’s for $53.
Additonally, six dresses by six contemporary
designers inspired by her outfits are on display in Saks Fifth Avenue’s
