It’s an awkward time of year when it comes to fashion — summer is in
full swing (with the requisite high temperatures and humidity), but the
stores are filled with heavy fall pieces. What’s a stylish girl to do?

The answer: think transitional pieces. Look for items that
are breezy enough to wear immediately, but can also work as layering
pieces once the weather cools down. You’ll want to avoid seasonal
fabrics like wool, velvet, or seersucker, but ultra-soft cottons, jersey, and silks are perfectly versatile buys any time of the year.  When it comes to color and print, stick with the classics (anything too tropical or pastel just screams summer).

Camisoles, halters, and tanks are obvious choices
here, because they’re easy to make fall-appropriate by simply adding a
jacket. Now is the time to stock up on delicate, feminine tops that are
perfect for pairing with a sharply tailored suit, or basic cotton tanks
that to wear under your more casual sweaters and hoodies. Don’t forget
to try out your new summery tops over a fitted long sleeve tee as well,
because this can end up being a whole new spin on a favorite piece.
Check out this sleek and sexy Susana Monaco halter top — the sapphire blue shade is a hot color for fall.

Dresses are another item that can do multiple-season duty, if you go for classic colors in mid-weight fabrics. Simple jersey dresses in solid colors are ideal for this purpose; in fact, you may find yourself wearing a dress like one by Melanie Nicole
(available at Second City Style’s very own store) more than anything
else in your closet. Also, remember that minidresses can even be worn
as tunics well into winter, like this one by KZ JerZey.
