The 2015 PGA Championship was at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin last weekend and I had the opportunity to attend on Saturday on behalf of OMEGA. This marked the fifth PGA Championship at which OMEGA an Official Patron of The PGA of America served as Official Timekeeper.
When I hear the name OMEGA, I immediately think of high quality Swiss watches. I’m reminded of the watch my best friend purchased when we were in Europe since her father always bought OMEGAs, or the Constellation watch my boyfriend splurged on in the 90s and still wears today.OMEGA timeline
OMEGA set up a beautiful display booth at the tournament with a timeline including the brand’s history as Official Timekeeper for the Olympics since 1931. The technology today is unbelievable as they continue to time the Olympic games, for example, with multiple pictures taken per second to accurately time finish lines for track events, and underwater clocks for swimming. This year OMEGA has reason to celebrating since golf will be returning as an Olympic sport for the first time in more than a century at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
OMEGA Ambassador Rory McIlroy, who won the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014, finished at nine under par and in 17th place in his first tournament back after an ankle injury. Australia’s Jason Day won his first-ever major championship with a three-shot victory over American Jordan Spieth. To commemorate his PGA Championship victory, Day was presented with an OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra “Golf” Master Co-Axial timepiece. It was created to celebrate the brand’s expanded presence in the world of golf and is powered by OMEGA’s revolutionary Master Co-Axial calibre 8500 self-winding mechanical movement. With green “Seamaster” and numbers on the minute track the watch recalls the courses where golf’s great events are contested.
After learning about the history of OMEGA and its timepieces, I look forward to seeing the brand at future golf tournaments, and the Olympics!
