Jay Godfrey‘s New York Fashion Week presentation was a real stand out among many of the other collections. Entitled “Electric West” the collection encompassed modern styles with sleek accents, but the main focus was the flair of the down-home country western pieces. The rich textures presented included chevron prints, lace and luscious suede, denim (a first time attempt for Mr. Godfrey) and of course fringe. The atmosphere at The Hub captured the intended vision, where models standing in bails of hay surrounded a live performance of classic rock and roll tunes.
The mix of clothing throughout the collection also was incredibly thoughtful and included a balance of formal gowns, full skirts, capes, jackets, cigarette pants and cropped tops. Each look was styled to perfection using the designer’s own fedoras and belts. The standout for me was the balance between sexy silhouettes and western accents. Perhaps the last thing most consumers think about when they think of country western is “sexy” however, this collection did just that in maintaining a New York street-style vibe that all women will want to re-create.
Though rich textures and substantial fabrics were used to create the pieces, it somehow managed to emote a playfulness that didn’t allow the collection to take itself too seriously. My favorite looks were tied between the black and white chevron tuxedo and the tan suede fringed cape. Both looks proved to be showstoppers.
Even though Mr. Godfrey is a newby to New York Fashion Week, having only shown for the first time last year, he’s proven to be a visionary of wearable fashion that demand attention with its luxe fabric choices, beautiful design and playful concepts. I’m looking forward to see what he has to offer in coming years.
