Brooke Astor, the socially prominent philanthropist who came to be
almost synonymous with her adopted city of New York, has died. She was 105.
At her home in t her home in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.
Roberta Brooke Russell in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on March 30, 1902,
Astor came to dominate New York’s social and philanthropic calendars
nearly 50 years ago, following the death of her third husband, Vincent
Astor, in 1959. She gave away most of her $157 million fortune to
feed the city’s poor and nourish its cultural life. Now that is style!
They just don’t make them like that anymore. Rest in peace.
