It was only a matter of time before someone came out with a book like this and I am left thinking…why didn’t I think of this first? Maggie Davis (Consumer Editor of Time Out) and Charlotte Williamson (writer for Harper’s Bazaar and Elle) are obsessed with very nice things. These chic, dedicated and masterful shoppers were on a mission to find the very best products in 101 categories (clothing, handbags, beauty, shoes, wine, bed linens, etc). What I delight in most is that the categories include some of which I have not a clue (menswear, coffee, chairs and motor scooters). Therefore, this book will most assuredly become my essential gift giving bible.
Keep in mind, we are talking classic, high-quality items that become heritage items (no H&M disposable duds mentioned).
You know, the ones you use to death and then pass on to your kids? Of course the expected Burberry raincoat, Hermes Birkin bag and Blahniks are in there, but so are some that I didn’t know or expect.
Which ones ask you? Hmmm. OK, in the women’s watch category; the gold Cartier Tankissme for a mere $25,000 (with diamonds), in the self-tanner category; St. Tropez Shimmering Bronzing Mist ($40), in champagne; Louis Roederer Brut Premier ($50), in cashmere sweaters; Loro Piana (the expected Pringle of Scotland was also included), in coffee;
Civet Coffee, Kopi Luwak (at $175 per pound!) and the LBD (little black dress); Lanvin…with which I totally agree.
I also appreciate that stores, websites and prices are given for all of the items. Additionally, not everything is super expensive and some less pricey/good-value alternatives are mentioned in some categories as well.
What are the writer’s ‘can’t live without’ favorites? For Maggie Davis it’s Elemis Pro-Collage face cream and Blue Cult jeans. For Charlotte Williamson her personal must-haves include; Shalimar perfume, L’Artisan du Chocolat truffles and cashmere socks.
