Brrr! Bundle up Chicago, winter is on the way! We’re officially in November which means our unbundled days are numbered. And while the future looks cold, dark and bleak, the transition has been made somewhat easier with the help of stylish outerwear. Sumptuous fabrics like cashmere, lambswool and mohair are about to be pushed to the front of our closets and this year, we’re excited to have shearling join the ranks.
A chic and often more budget-friendly option to most fur, shearling makes a memorable outerwear statement from a fuzzy collar to a textured coat. This season, the runways were awash in shearling options, perfect for everything from a chilly breeze to the first frost. Tommy Hilfiger chose to display full coverage with a rich brown leather trench topped off with a shearling collar and cuffs. Channel the same sense of just-off-the-slopes, Aspen-chic with Choies Brown Shearling Coat, which can easily be tossed over an over-sized sweater and leggings or some patterned tights and a mini.
For those looking to deviate from your classic black or brown, there are shearling options in a number of other arguably more interesting neutrals, like eggplant. Jason Wu cat walked his lush, deep purple shearling confections for fall 2014 and we were immediately smitten with the out-of-the-box hue. For a transitional garment that can be worn inside or out as the seasons change, the Karl by Karl Donoghue Shearling Vest is the perfect punctuation to a classic crew neck sweater and boots.
Keeping in step with the fall 2014 spectrum, gray is another shearling color gaining traction. Easily perked up with a brightly colored scarf, or kept muted with black or brown accessories, gray is is a shearling color that’s been quickly climbing the ranks. The lining of the rich suede jackets in the All Saints Fall 2014 collection look as snuggly as they do chic and we found ourselves dreaming of furry, oversized collars. Jekel’s “Pressy” Shawl Collar Jacket has the same decadent fur collar in the same of-the-moment gray and after careful deliberation, we realized that this investment piece was definitely worth the splurge.
When the collars, cuffs, and linings just aren’t enough, sometimes you need to up the ante and go for the allover look. Besides being absurdly warm, full shearling coats and jackets have that unique texture to stand out in even the most stylish outerwear crowds. BCBG’s dip-dyed coats were nothing less than furry amounts of fun. Borrowing the same sense of whimsy, we opted for a more retro mod look from our British style sleuths at ASOS. Their Faux Curly Fur Coat will serve as a treat to both your closet, and your wallet and will keep you warmed up as the temperatures dip down. Slip on some shearling and you’ll be warm and snug all season long!
