Runway To Real Way: Black And White

Despite what the weather looks like outside, there is no “gray” area when it comes to the best trends in fall fashion! This month the answer for universally flattering, seasonal staples is written – literally – in black and white. As sleeves and hemlines get longer and layers start piling on, it’s best to anchor any fall look with a neutral base that can be built upon. Fall 2014 runways were brimming with graphic, black and white pieces that served as both back drops and statement pieces and we decided that this year, we’d like to have plenty of both. Here’s what will be added to our closet this month.

One of the most versatile backdrops that can work with an infinite number of outfit combinations is black and white stripes. Brandon Sun took the look to the next level this season by incorporating high slits and slicing his pieces with sheer panels. We love the simplicity of a good horizontal stripe and used his look as inspiration to find a great day to evening piece that would take us from the office to cocktails. French Connection’s French Stripe Dress can easily be paired with tights, leggings, and a innumerable amount of outerwear options for achieving an enviable amount of simple, Parisian chic. Berets optional.

If stripes aren’t your style, feel free to go a little dotty with black and white polka dots. Tiny b + w prints were awash at the Fall 2014 runways, getting a seasonal update with fabrics like fur at the Dennis Basso runway show. To ease the transition from summer to fall, we loved the idea of a shirtdress mini, perfect for work or any fun outdoor fall activity when paired with layers like leggings, a scarf and a warm little hat. Old Navy’s has the perfect budget-friendly piece that will last you the entire calendar year. When the first frost hits, bundle their Pullover Shirt Dress up, and when the ice starts to melt, strip off the layers and wear it alone! Talk about a worthy investment.

Color blocking has taken the black and white combo from blah to bold over the past few seasons. The pairing of ebony and ivory is a surefire way to make a memorable statement for any occasion. Our evening wardrobe will be punctuated this season with a piece inspired by the elegant wares of Derek Lam. Lam’s piecemeal dresses and separates in his Fall 2014 collection had us dreaming in film noir sequences. For an equally bold bit of drama, we decided we’d splurge on an item that we’d get the most mileage out of. Theory’s Dexas Dress is the perfect complement to anything from a client meeting to a cold weather wedding. Wrap a decadent pashmina around your shoulders and grab a sparkling clutch for a standout black and white look everyone will be green over.

There’s nothing like a new season to give you an excuse to go shoe shopping! One of the hottest footwear trends on the fall 2014 runways was a throwback to the bygone era of the 90’s and the chunky, Doc Marten-inspired ankle boots. Calvin Klein incorporated them into his black and white palette, anchoring a feminine lady coat with a shin-hugging pair. We love the idea of a more masculine bootie with any of our featured black and white pieces, making them more wearable for the season than just about anything in your closet! Our best bet is the Stuart Weitzman Negev boot for it’s clean and refined look combined with a subtly tough, no nonsense attitude. No matter how try the trend, read our fine print on black and white pieces and fill your closet with these eye-popping items this season!
