Kirsten Dunst

The carpet was black at the NYC premiere of Spiderman 3, but that didn’t keep the stars from sparkling. Leading lady Kirsten Dunst wore silvery Versace at the U.S. debut for the comic book-inspired movie, while Tobey McGuire looked dapper in suit with wife Jennifer Meyer, in an off-the-shoulder, tiered mini.

The premiere was held at the Kaufman Astoria Stadium in Queens, a nod to the hometown of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. A crowd of 3,000+ cheering fans waited for tickets and tried to catch a glimpse of the celebrity-filled carpet. P Diddy arrived with his children in tow, as did Susan Sarandon (in a much blogged about fashion faux pas), as well as models Petra Nemcova and Adriana Lima. Also spotted was Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss, designer of her eponymous fashion line and Ginnifer Goodwin. After much waiting, the 14 theaters were filled, the free popcorn was running low and the film began.

James Franco

The black carpet served as a nod to the dark side of the threequel, in which even Spiderman shows an evil streak, along with count them – three bad guys – the Green Goblin played by James Franco, Thomas Hayden Church as Sandman and Topher Grace as Venom. While Spiderman demonstrated his darker side, a villain showed he actually had a heart of gold, and overall, the movie had a humorous undertone that was missing from its predecessors.

When the credits rolled, a more select crowd walked to Stage E of the Kaufman Studios, a raw space transformed into a vibrant Spiderman playground, complete with Manhattan skyline, webs of red light beams, complimentary food and drinks (and the nicest port-a-potties east of the Queens Midtown Tunnel).

Spotted at the after party was Topher Grace, Bryce Dallas Howard and Mageina Tovah, but the ‘Reserved for Dunst’ table stayed void of star power, as the birthday girl celebrated with family and friends back on the island.
