Michael Kors Fights World Hunger and Named Ambassador

The fight to end world hunger has a major champion behind it in Michael Kors, and the American designer’s efforts are being recognized. The designer was named the United Nations World Food Programme Global Ambassador Against Hunger and announced several new projects for his Watch Hunger Stop initiative.

Kate Hudson, friend of Kors, is helping to bring awareness to the project as the new contributor and face of the initiative. Kors and Hudson will debut a limited edition Bradshaw watch in October in the designer’s stores and online. Sales of each watch will provide meals to 100 children. Shoppers will also be able to make additional donations on World Food Day on Oct. 16.

St. John Knits Goes Back to Its Roots

Bernd Beetz, interim chief executive officer of St. John Knits Inc. has grand business plans set in motion to reposition the house of St. John. “This is a tremendous brand, a lot of craftsmanship,” he told WWD. “It’s born in California. All this positioning to me was really important to get through [to customers]. The company has done too little in the past to bring that story forward.” The strategy: Elevate the collection, make it more modern and get back to the company’s roots as a designer knitwear maker founded in 1962 by Bob and Marie Gray. The Grays are a fashion legend, having launched the label on a whim from their San Fernando Valley garage and eventually building a cultlike following. Whether that story sticks with a new generation, only time will tell.

New ads for fall broke today in Elle, representing the first time in several years that the brand has advertised in a national publication. There’s also e-commerce set to roll out (finally) in October.

Woolmark Names U.S. Winners: Tanya Taylor and  Siki Im

The winners of the 2015/2016 International Woolmark Prize USA regional finals were Tanya Taylor for the women’s wear prize and Siki Im for the men’s wear prize. Each will receive a financial contribution of 50,000 Australian dollars, or about $37,000 at current exchange, toward their next collection. They will also be invited to compete in the international finals.

In the women’s wear category, Taylor won among Chris Gelinas, Kaelen, Nellie Partow, and Novis. In men’s wear, Siki Im beat out Cadet, David Hart, Lucio Castro, and Thaddeus O’Neil. The winners were selected by a jury based on sketches of a six-piece merino-wool capsule collection, with one garment actually produced.
