New York Fashion Week: New Venues, Logos and Agendas
Most of the fashion shows move further downtown along the West Side, but the Council of Fashion Designers of America is exerting more clout thanks to the purchase of the Fashion Calendar, the master schedule of all fashion-related activities. The CFDA also created a new logo and marketing and branding campaign to promote NYFW all fashion activities taking place in the city, with the support of Mayor Bill de Blasio. The seminannual fashion weeks generate more than $900 million for New York.
The CFDA is using its power as WME/IMG, which produces one-third of the fashion shows and has historically controlled the fashion week scene as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, has made several major changes of its own this season, looking to create an event that is more focused on fashion and less about hype and commercial activities. Having left Lincoln Center NYFW has moved to two new venues, Skylight at Moynihan Station at 360 West 33rd Street and Skylight Clarkson Sq at 550 Washington Street in west SoHo.
This is the first season that Made Fashion Week, which features 25 emerging designers at Milk Studios at 450 West 15th Street, is under WME/IMG’s ownership. IMG will have a fourth location called HQ at 451 West 14th Street, where sponsors will hold activities and panels, along with live-streaming of the fashion shows. By moving the sponsors there and open to the general public from 4 to 6 p.m., it is expected to create much less distraction at the other venues. There will be more than 300 shows and countless events all over the city.
Macy To Shutter Up to 40 Stores
Macy’s Inc. said it would shutter 35 to 40 underperforming stores early next year as it course corrects for a digital future. This comes after Macy’s shuttered 14 of its namesake doors beginning last January. Macy’s store base is being reimagined to serve digital age shoppers. The company is tying to drive traffic through a deal to test license Best Buy electronics departments in 10 doors this holiday.
Terry Lundgren, Macy’s chairman and chief executive officer, said: “Physical stores remain absolutely vital to our omnichannel strategy, which provides local touchpoints and tailored merchandise assortments for shoppers in nearly every major market. As new shopping centers are opened, however, many customers change their shopping habits and often the sales volume of a store gets divided among the new and nearby, existing centers.”
Alber Elbaz/Lanvin: Manifesto Exhibition Opens Today
The “Alber Elbaz/Lanvin: Manifesto” exhibition that opens in Paris today at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and it focuses on the human-led process behind the collection, including loose threads and frayed nerves.
The exhibition is not about Photoshop or photo shock,” Elbaz said on Tuesday, conducting interviews in one red-walled room of the showcase that glowed with the eerie light of a darkroom. “It’s really about showing that we did not manipulate the images, that we photographed them and we left them as they are.”
